Chang Bai, Ph.D.

Vice President, Biology

Chang Bai, Ph.D. has been the Vice President of Biology at Pharmaron Inc. since October 2008.  His responsibilities include strategic development and technical operation for this new area and in vitro ADMET.  Prior to this appointment, he had 12-year experience in R&D at Merck and Company, Inc., West Point, Pennsylvania.  His group responsibilities were drug discovery programs through biology and pharmacology studies, ranging from target ID/validation, assay development and compound profiling for MedChem and HTS campaigns to development and execution of biomarker assays for in vivo models.  He made critical contributions to the initiation of three lead optimization programs and the identification of four development candidates, with three compounds currently in clinical trials.  As a Research Fellow, his lab’s research interests focused on developing pharmacotherapy via targeting nuclear receptors, G-protein coupled receptors and other target classes in the endocrine area.  

Dr. Bai is an author of publications and meeting presentations that include frequently cited articles in Cell, G&D, Nature, EMBO J, MCB, JBC and PNAS.  He received his Ph.D. with Dr. Stephen J. Elledge, at Baylor College of Medicine, where he studied the cell cycle and cancer, and discovered the F-box.  He then did postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. C. Thomas Caskey at Merck Research Laboratory.  Chang obtained his B.Sc from Zhongshan University.  He also served as a member of the Executive Council of SAPA (2006-2007, 2008-2009) and SAPA-GP (2005-2009).
