Wenfang Miao, Ph.D.
Vice President, Analytical ChemistryDr. Wenfang Miao joined Pharmaron in mid 2008 as Vice President of Analytical Chemistry. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Miao held a Senior Manager position in Analytical Sciences at Elan Drug Delivery, Elan Pharmaceuticals. She managed an analytical chemistry section that provided Analytical R&D and cGMP services to internal and client-based product development projects, from preclinical development through commercial manufacturing. From 2002-2006, Dr. Miao served as a Principal Scientist in the Pharmaceutical Development Division at GlaxoSmithKline, providing analytical R&D and Quality Control support to product development projects from candidate selection to registration. She received several awards from GSK, including the exceptional performance award for leading a multi-discipline drug development team in a Design for Manufacture Pilot program that progressed a compound from candidate selection to Phase II clinical trial. Prior to joining GSK, she was a Senior Research Associate in Analytical Sciences at Elan Drug Delivery. From 1998-2001, Dr. Miao held a Pharmaceutical Chemist position at Carrington Laboratories, Inc. and worked on the isolation and characterization of natural complex carbohydrates and proteins from Aloe Vera. She is a member of the Executive Committee of SAPA-GP (Sino-American Pharmaceutical Association- Great Philadelphia).
Dr. Miao received her BS in Chemistry from Beijing University, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1990. She then worked at the Department of Pharmacy in Chaoyang Hospital in Beijing for two years. She obtained a Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry from Texas Christian University in 2000 under the supervision of Professor Manfred Reinecke. Her research area is in isolation, structural elucidation and synthesis of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants.
