Human and porcine eyes share many anatomical and physiological characteristics, including size of the eye, holangiotic retinal vasculature, no tapetum, cone photoreceptors in the outer retina and a similar scleral thickness. These similarities make porcine species a preferred model for ocular toxicology and pharmacology studies. Therefore, our purpose was to establish a chronic retinal neovascularization (RNV) porcine model that can be employed to evaluate the efficacy of anti-neovascular therapies.
