Ultra-sensitive Analytical Methodology

Pharmaron employs a NEC 250 KeV, Single-Stage Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (SSAMS) at its facility in Germantown, MD. It is configured with two ion sources – each ion source accepts a 134-sample cathode wheel. A major advantage of having two ion sources is one can be used for sample analysis while the second is prepared with another wheel of samples. 

AMS is unique in several ways

  • Detector counts C14, C13 and C12 atoms providing pg and fg per mL sensitivity for C14 radiolabelled analytes in biological matrices
  • Quantifies compounds 1,000 to 10,000 fold lower than LC-MS/MS
  • Free from all matrix interferences
  • Unaffected by chemical structure
  • Applicable to a wide range of 14C compounds from small molecules to biologics
  • Ultra-sensitivity enables analysis of very small samples from a few µL or µg or a few thousand cells
  • Quantifies total 14C content
  • Quantifies specific 14C analytes of interest (e.g. parent compound, metabolites) by combining fractionation methods such as HP(UP)LC with AMS
